MEMORIAL DAY | ALBANY - N. ADAMS, MA
Monday, May 25, 2009

Traveling with Bob (Durlak) and Lillian (Mulero) to
North Adams, MA to visit MASSMOCA - in particular to
see Guy Ben-Ner's video installations, which the New
York Times Friday ARTS section featured among their
what-to-do-this-weekend picks.

Lillian says, "Memorial Day is not what it used to be."

"What do you mean?" asks Bob.

"Well, it's not really about WWI, or II, or even Vietnam
anymore. They're too far back in history. Now, it's about
celebrating the preservation of our own memories."

"Maybe," I suggest, "they should rename it Alzheimer's Day."

"Good idea," they reply in unison. Bob goes on to suggest that
we are a privledged generation, probably the first in history to have
our nearly complete memory banks preserved in amber on the web.
Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, MySpace, blogs, email logs, credit history,
medical records, school records, IRS and SS records, IM's, phone
voice mails, Skype calls, supermarket/mall/bank/convenience
store/gas station/and a hundred other surveillance camera records stored,
archived, and instantly accessible. Nothing will be lost of our generation
and each of us should be able to google-up whatever we need, whenever
we want it.

New Yorker Cover Art, Painted With an iPhone

By STEPHANIE CLIFFORDThe New York Times

Some people send text with their iPhones, and some play games. The artist
Jorge Colombo created this week's cover for The New Yorker with his.

Mr. Colombo drew the June 1 cover scene, of a late-night gathering around a
42nd Street hot dog stand, entirely with the iPhone application Brushes.
Because of the smears and washes of color required by the inexact medium,
it comes off as dreamy, not sharp and technological.

The best feature of it is that it doesn't feel like something that was
done digitally; quite the opposite, said Françoise Mouly, the art
editor for The New Yorker. All too often the technology is directed in
only one direction, which is to make things more tight, and this, what he
did very well, is use this technology for something that is free flowing,
and I think that's what makes it so poetic and magical.

Mr. Colombo bought his iPhone in February, and the $4.99 Brushes
application soon after, and said the portability and accessibility of the
medium appealed to him. He began the scene by beginning with the
buildings structure, then layering on the taxis, neon lights, hot-dog
stand and people. (A video of the process is available at newyorker.com
beginning on Monday.)

It made it easy for me to sketch without having to carry all my pens and
brushes and notepads with me, and I like the fact that I am drawing with a
set of tools that anybody can have easily in their pocket,  he said.
There is one other advantage of the phone, too: no one notices he is
drawing. Mr. Colombo said he stood on 42nd Street for about an hour with no
interruptions.

It gives him an anonymity in the big city that an artist with the easel
wouldn't have, Ms. Mouly said.

Absolutely nobody can tell I am drawing, Mr. Colombo said. In
fact, once I was doing the drawing at some place, and my wife was around,
and they asked her why did I have to work so hard? I seemed to be always on
my iPhone sending messages.

STEVE FISHER AND FAMILY VISIT ALBANY | FROM PRAGUE

SUMMER, 2003

Steve Fisher, wife Jitka and sons Pavel and Milo
spent a good part of the summer of 2003 visiting
with his parents on Albany-Shaker Road in Albany.

During this visit, Steve made a surprise announcement
which was captured on video, but until now - lost in
the archives at 75Grand. Today, we are pleased to present for your viewing
pleasure these photographs and video clip.

Stay tuned - more to follow.

Steve says: "Listen boys, I've got something to tell the people
but you're going to have to help me, OK?"

In my opinion...

TO: opinion@dailygazette.com

... the look, new to me, of the Gazette deserves attention
and accolades. Over the years I've been an inveterate reader
of the New York Times which I pick up from the corner market
next to my house in downtown Albany. Next to the Times, the
Times Union and the Gazette are always on display. On occasion,
when a local story grabs my interest, I pick up the TU, but once I've
read the story, put it down again.

Unfortunately it's been a while since I've picked up the Gazette, but
I did yesterday - to look at the photo of the Corporate Challange. Then
I noticed how your paper has been redesigned. It is really handsome,
readable, contemporary and compelling. Unlike the TU, the news does not
get lost in the sea of advertisement.

Kudos and a tip of the 75Grand Texas A&M baseball cap to y'all.

Hi, Jan Galligan (75grand).

Simply Poetry (semaphore) is now following your updates on Twitter.

TWO RECENT SAMPLES...

Washday. Breathless and surprised,
we'd run all the way up from the hill,
hand in hand the way we used to do
in my mother's yard

Out and in between the curtained shirts and
pillowcases of another week, our faces cool
with the crush of wrung out dew against
our cheeks.

Dearest Partner,

It is my honour to request your assistance on this bussiness proposition
which if pursued to its conclusion will be of immense benefit to both of
us. This request may seem strange but I hope you will give it attention and
respond to me as soon as possible. I feel quite safe and satisfy dealing
with you in this Mutual Beneficial transaction. Though, this medium
(Internet) has been greatly abused, I choose to reach you through it
because it Still remains the fastest, surest and most secured medium of
communication.
l also guarantee you that this deal is hitch free from all
what you may think of and i encourage you to read it to the end so that you
Can understand it very well.

I am John Kumar from Ivory Coast, the son of late Mr.Kumar being that I lost
my father. My father was a serving director of the Cocoa exporting board
until his death.

He was assassinated by the rebels following the political uprising. My
mother and myself tried and eventually succeeded in securing some of these
assets, which include a mansion and some physical cash. We left Ivory Coast
with the total amount of Three million seven hundred and fifty thousand
United States Dollars [ $3,750.000.00 ] which we deposited; sealed in a
DIPLOMATIC VAULT as valued diplomatic documents belonging to our foreign
affiliates.

After depositing the money, we were left with no other option than to SEEK
SAFETY in a country here in South America which i will disclose to you
later. The problem now is that we are looking for a trustworthy partner in
a stable economy who can help us move the money out of the Security
company. In that case, I want to know if you can help us transfer the funds
into your account in your country or any safe place for it will be use for
investment purpose.

We shall offer you 20% of the total sum, five percent will be set aside for
any expenses if any that might be incurred by both parties during the
transaction, while the remaining 75% will be used for investment. Also you
will be entitled to 10% payment from annual turnover in whatever business
undertaking you advice us to go into. Though we have plans to do investment
in your country, like real estate and industrial production, but I am only
a young man and my mother is a woman so we shall need your advice.

However, this arrangement will only hold for a period of ten consecutive
years
. This is my reason for writing to you. So I expect your immediate
response
so that we can conclude this transaction in the very shortest
time
. As soon as i get your response, i will give more details on how to
proceed for the funds claim.

Please indicate your genuine willingness and your urgent response via this
my private email account;[johnkumar@sissify.com ]

Yours Sincerely,
 John Kumar.
