Last year, auditioning for the forthcoming Ben Affleck/Justin Timberlake gambling movie, RUNNER RUNNER, trying out for the part of a slick but obnoxious gambler from New York, whose role is to harass the BOXMAN running the table, then get in a heated argument with the Justin Timberlake character, I had spent a late night and all next morning practicing my lines, swaggering around the house, being obnoxious to Lillian while trying to live the part. At the audition, Lillian and I immediately ran into Peter, a blond, good-looking young guy, recently arrived on the island from New York City, also auditioning for the part of SHOOTER. Shit, I thought, I'll never get past him for this part.
For various reasons, we both lost out to Hollywood's Hugh Scott. Then, the other night, cruising the Condado, I saw Peter, playing his guitar at a street-side bar. I sat down to listen, and from between-songs-patter, learned that after a short stint playing with Pedro Capo's band, Peter has gone solo, writing songs as well as singing the crowd's favorite oldies. Here's one crowd-pleaser that he has updated to fit his current situation:
