I just (finally) finished reading Roberto Bolano's "2666".

Here's the opening sentence, page 3:

The first time that Jean-Claude Pelletier read Benno von Archimboldi was Christmas, 1980 in Paris, when he was nineteen years old and studying German literature.

and, the final sentences, page 893:

"You're right, I do," said Archimboldi as he got up and took his leave of the descendant of Furst Puckler. Soon afterward he left the park and the next morning he was on his way to Mexico.
