TWO PHOTOGRAPHS NEAR BAYAMON, PR, 2013

From an oral history interview with Jack Delano and Irene Delano, June 12, 1965 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, conducted by Richard Doud, for the Archives of American Art.

IRENE D.

And that’s another thing that fascinates me about photography and that is that no picture is the same when it’s put together with another one. As soon as you put two together you tell one thing. If you put another one with it, it’s a completely different thing.

JACK D.

I think the great thing about the Farm Security photographs, regardless of the artistic merit of any individual photograph, is that they were all being done in a search for the heart of the American people.

EL FUEGO EL PROXIMA TIEMPO

photo caption: window display, parking lot, central Bayamon, PR

DATELINE: POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.

The house was like no other in the neighborhood. She loved books, and nearly every room was filled with volumes from floor to ceiling. He collected cameras, guns and books about the Civil War. Neighbors marveled at the tools and gadgets he had amassed through his job at I.B.M. and his evening shifts in the Sears hardware department, including six lawn mowers.

In their yard were parked two Amphicars, novelty vehicles that could drive on land and in water, of which only about 3,800 were ever produced. At a time when computers were still relatively unknown in regular homes, they had several, lined up in a room off the living room where he also kept a police and fire scanner running at all times.

“They were a married couple,” said a neighbor. “She was normal. He was not.”

Only to a next-door neighbor and close co-workers did she hint that his oddities bothered her. She told one that she disliked the house’s clutter and wished that he had not kept their dead cat frozen in their refrigerator: she dreaded opening it to cook. She complained to another of having to hand her paycheck over to him each week.

When the couple’s only son drowned after falling off the hood of one of the Amphicars in a Mississippi lake, she told a co-worker she was upset that her husband parked the same Amphicar in the driveway, a daily reminder of her grief.

“Knowing her, she tolerated it because she didn’t have the wherewithal to tell him to knock it off or I’m going to leave,” said.a co-worker.

10,500,000,00 !!!!!

Would you ask Ben whether he means 1,050,000,000 or 10,500,000.00?  In his line of business he should appreciate the need for precision.  Also, ask him US what?  US$? US¢?  US‰?

I don't mean to be picky but it makes a difference, at least to me?  If it's 10,500,000.00 that he means and he's talking per mils, not dollars or even cents, well, that's a whole different orders of magnitude!  Not that I wouldn't have gratitude at whatever magnitude, but we could be talking anything from a spring breeze to a typhoon in terms of windfall velocity here.

PSYCHOLOGY TODAY

photo caption: Still Life, Santa Olaya, PR

This morning, drinking coffee and trolling FB, I found a friend-request from a perky young blonde. Checked her connections and saw a few young artist friend here on the island, so I said "O.K.."

A minute later "she" messaged me and asked what music I liked, which put me on guard. Who asks what music you like, and why should she care, I thought. Then she *says*, "gotta run, send me your cell number and I'll TXT you."

Uh-huh, I thought -- and then I pulled the plug from her, and sent messages to the young guys who were the "friends in common." See photo below (link at end).

Psychological profile:

Randy old guy: 1) sees photo of attractive young woman who wants to connect; 2) notes other artist friends; 3) says, why not? 4) gets immediate reply; 5) almost falls for it, except for the *music* bit;  6) if *she* hadn't asked that question, I might have sent *her* my cell #.

Cell TXT *conversation*

HER: Hey! Seventyfive. Thx for connect.

ME: No prob. Jennifer!

HER: So, what's up?

ME: Nothin' just chillin' on the veranda. Coffee and sunshine.

HER: sounds so COOL!

HER: The robbers carted away with my bag containing my wallet, phone, flight ticket and other valuables...

ME: OMG!

HER: I will like you to lend me the sum of $3,500 US Dollars or any amount you can afford as half bread is better than none so that i can sort out my hotel bills and get myself back...

ME: Uh sure, I mean, I'll try to help you.

HER: I promise to pay you back with an extra $100 US Dollars as soon as i return home in a few days time so kindly let me know if you can be of help.

RUNNING ON EMPTY? : JACKSON BROWNE

photo caption: Beach towels, airport gift shop, San Juan, PR (tip of the photo hat to artist Bobby Cruz -- Recent exhibition at galeria 619.5 Calle Cerra, Santure, PR: "Simplemente… Bobby")

Last year, auditioning for the forthcoming Ben Affleck/Justin Timberlake gambling movie, RUNNER RUNNER, trying out for the part of a slick but obnoxious gambler from New York, whose role is to harass the BOXMAN running the table, then get in a heated argument with the Justin Timberlake character, I had spent a late night and all next morning practicing my lines, swaggering around the house, being obnoxious to Lillian while trying to live the part. At the audition, Lillian and I immediately ran into Peter, a blond, good-looking young guy, recently arrived on the island from New York City, also auditioning for the part of SHOOTER. Shit, I thought, I'll never get past him for this part.

For various reasons, we both lost out to Hollywood's Hugh Scott. Then, the other night, cruising the Condado, I saw Peter, playing his guitar at a street-side bar. I sat down to listen, and from between-songs-patter, learned that after a short stint playing with Pedro Capo's band, Peter has gone solo, writing songs as well as singing the crowd's favorite oldies. Here's one crowd-pleaser that he has updated to fit his current situation:

PUERTO RICAN GIRLS

Well Haitian girls are bad

I really dig the clothes they wear

And Dominican girls with the way they talk

They knock me out when I go there

Jamaica's farmers daughters

really make you feel alright

And Cuban girls with the way they kiss

They keep their boyfriends warm all night

I wish they all could be Puerto Rican

I wish they all could be Puerto Rican

I wish they all could be Puerto Rican girls

Barbados has the sunshine

And the girls all get dark tans

I dig the french bikinis on Grenada island

girls by the palm trees in the sands

I've been all 'round the Car-i-be

And I've seen all kinds of girls

Yeah, but I can't wait to get back to my island home

With the cutest girls in the world

I wish they all could be Puerto Rican

I wish they all could be Puerto Rican

I wish they all could be Puerto Rican girls

I wish they all could be Puerto Rican

(girls, girls, girls yeah I dig them)

I wish they all could be Puerto Rican

(girls, girls, girls yeah I dig them)

I wish they all could be Puerto Rican

(girls, girls, girls yeah I dig them)

I wish they all could be Puerto Rican

(girls, girls, girls yeah I dig them)

Details on the film  RUNNER, RUNNER, directed by Brad Furman, written by Brian Koppelman and scheduled for release September, 2013

(Look for Lillian and Jan as extras in the Casino Night Party scenes at billionaire Ben Affleck's seaside mansion. Lillian should be seen standing next to Hugh Scott at the craps table.)

OPINION : THE NEW YORK TIMES
By EVGENY MOROZOV
PUBLISHED: MARCH 2, 2013

“WHEN your heart stops beating, you’ll keep tweeting” is the reassuring slogan greeting visitors at the Web site for LivesOn, a soon-to-launch service that promises to tweet on your behalf even after you die. By analyzing your earlier tweets, the service would learn “about your likes, tastes, syntax” and add a personal touch to all those automatically composed scribblings from the world beyond. LivesOn may yet prove to be a parody, or it may fizzle for any number of reasons, but as an idea it highlights the dominant ideology of Silicon Valley today: what could be disrupted should be disrupted — even death. Barriers and constraints — anything that imposes artificial limits on the human condition — are being destroyed with particular gusto.

138 reviews on Yelp. You've been busy...

Here's my favorite. I have yet to read all of your reviews, although I will. I took Fred Escher to borinquena not long before I left Albany in 2010.

Jan

YELP REVIEW:

Okay, La Borinquena has only been around for a few months but it's already the go-to place for take-out Puerto Rican cuisine, considering it's the only Puerto Rican go-to place in the area. Everything is made from scratch, no freezer other than the ones holding the home-made limber ices, which are incredible after you've let them melt down a little bit: tamarindo, mango, pina, crema and more.

More home-made killer goodness: knockout pork, beef or shrimp empanadas, small and similar to the Argentine versions. Great Alcapurrias, basically a spicy beef fritter.

The storefront is still a no-frills work in progress, but is definitely worth investigating and enjoying. The owner is gregarious, upbeat and hopeful ...
