A MEANINGFUL MECHANISM

Shusaku Arakawa (1936 - 2010) was born on July 6 in Nagoya, Japan, and studied art in Tokyo, where he became known for his neo-Dadaist creations.

Arakawa moved to New York in 1961. In his pocket, were $14 and the phone number of Marcel Duchamp, who he said became his mentor.

An anonymous reader writes:

"Even humans sometimes fail to recognize sarcasm and irony; can machines do better? An algorithm that identifies sarcastic tweets (PDF) on Twitter and sarcastic sentences in product reviews on Amazon will be presented next week at the International Conference for Weblogs and Social Media in Washington, DC, and at the Computational Natural Language Learning in Sweden in July. A team from the Hebrew University, Israel, has developed an algorithm that identifies sarcastic sentences by using a machine learning technique in which a small number of sarcastic sentences act as seeds for the software to learn and generalize on. The algorithm can then identify sarcastic sentences that are nothing like the examples. The variety of recognized sarcastic sentences is impressive, though the results are not perfect. But then again, WE don't do it SO well ourselves, DO WE?!!"

TAKE THE MONET AND RUN

A thief in Paris planned to steal some

paintings from the Louvre.

After careful planning, he got past

security, stole the paintings, and

made it safely to his van.

However, he was captured only two

blocks away when his van ran out of

gas.
When asked how he could mastermind

such a crime and then make such an

obvious error, he replied, 'Monsieur, that
is the reason I stole ze painting.

I had no Monet

to buy Degas

to make ze Van Gogh.'

See if you have De Gaulle to

send this on.

I sent it to you because I figured

you had nothing Toulouse.

power to the people grew out of discussions amongst feature staff and artists about making a benefit sale for feature at the time of the gallery having to leave its then new home at 276 bowery as to the recession and the uncertainty of feature reopening elsewhere. i had some personal and logistical hesitations to the benefit idea, and if it were to occur, april 1, the gallery's birthday seemed an appropriate time. when i finally nixed the benefit, end of feb, the generosity of artists was such a force to be reckoned with that this idea of extending the generosity directly to the public evolved. may day, seemed an appropriate time. thank you thank you.
