Steve:

Have you ever read Steinbeck's "Travels with Charley"? I'm reading it now, in short doses, between other things. Charley is Steinbeck's poodle who reminds me of my friend Fred's dog, both now living in Oaxaca, MX. I'm picturing them while I'm reading. The book is a record of Steinbeck's three month trip around the US, starting in Sag Harbor, north to Maine, west across the northern reaches, south along the California coast, east through Texas, with a stop in New Orleans, then north along the West Virginia mountains and ending back in New York City. Fred read this book last December while driving from NYC to Oaxaca. He had his french poodle with him. Fred's dog is a near duplicate of Steinbeck's.

from page 60:

A long time ago I was in the ancient city of Prague and at the same time Joseph Alsop, the justly famous critic of places and events, was there. He talked to informed people, officials, ambassadors; he read reports, even the fine print and figures, while I in my slipshod manner roved about with actors, gypsies, vagabonds. Joe and I flew home to America in the same plane, and on the way he told me about Prague, and his Prague had no relation to the city I had just seen and heard. It just wasn't the same place, and yet each of us was honest, neither one a liar, both pretty good observers by any standard, and we brought home two cities, two truths.

Fred:

Have you ever read Steinbeck's "Travels with Charley"? I'm reading it now, in short doses, between other things. I'd just recently heard about it somewhere and last week made an order via Amazon which showed up Friday in our mailbox. Fast, efficient, painless. They have a tool on their website for calling in questions. You enter your phone number and they call you in about 15 seconds. 10 more on hold for a sales assistant and in under a minute, your question is answered.

Charley is Steinbeck's poodle who reminds me of your dog. I picture you and him as I'm reading. The book is a record of a three month trip around the US, starting in Sag Harbor, north to Maine, west across the northern reaches, south along the California coast, east through Texas, with a stop in New Orleans, then north along the West Virginia mountains and ending back in New York City.

On page 50 he writes:

In Spanish there is a word for which I can't find a counter word in English. It is the verb vacilar, present participle vacilando. It does not mean vacillating at all. If one is vacilando, he is going somewhere but doesn't greatly care whether or not he gets there, although he has direction. My friend Jack Wagner has often, in Mexico, assumed this state of being. Let us say we wanted to walk in the streets of Mexico City but not at random. We would choose some article almost certain not to exist there and then diligently try to find it.

from my Spanish/English dictionary:

vacilar: Mex. to go on a spree; unhesitatingly

Jack Delano Biography (concise)

Delano was born as Jacob Ovcharov in the Ukraine and moved, with his parents and younger brother, to the United States in 1923. He studied graphic arts, photography, music and solfeggio. Awarded an art scholarship for his talents, he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts where he studied illustration and continued his musical training. Delano was awarded the Kesson traveling fellowship which took him to Europe where he bought a camera and got interested in photography.

He traveled to Puerto Rico in 1941 as a part of the Farm Security Administration documentary project. This trip had such a profound influence that he settled there permanently in 1946.

With his wife Irene he worked in the Community Division of the Department of Public Education producing films including "Los Peloteros," a Puertorrican film about poor rural kids and their love for baseball. Jack Delano's musical compositions include works of every type: orchestral, ballet, chamber, choral and solo vocal. His vocal music often showcases Puertorrican poetry, especially the works of friend and collaborator Tomás Blanco. His score for the film "Desde las Nubes" demonstrates an early use of electronic technique. His works composed after he moved to Puerto Rico are notable for the use of folk material in a classical form.

New Years Jokes LINKS
Dec 31, 2010 11:59am

"Quick -- I Need some New Year Jokes!"

New Year's Eve and New Year's Day--they are both about to arrive on the scene and you might want to have, for that New Year party, or bash, or get-together or celebration, a few jokes in your arsenal to give the girls a giggle or the guys a guffaw. TRY THIS: http://www.allbestmessages.com/new-year/New-Year-Jokes.php

*****************

On New Year's Eve, Jan was in no shape to drive, so he sensibly left the car parked and walked home.

As he was wobbling along, he was stopped by a policeman.

'What are you doing out here at 4 AM?' asked the police officer.

'I'm on my way to a lecture.'

'Who on earth, in their right mind, is going to give a lecture at this time on New Year's Eve?' enquired the constable sarcastically.

'My wife,' slurred Jan.

*****************

Lillian was taking an afternoon nap on New Year's Eve before the festivities. After she woke up, she confided to her husband, 'I just dreamed that you gave me a diamond ring for a New Year's present. What do you think it all means?'

'Ah, you'll know tonight,' he answered smiling broadly.

At midnight Jan approached and handed her small package.

Delighted and excited she opened it quickly.

There in her hand a book: "The Interpretation of Dreams".

*****************

On New Year's Eve, when I thought about the evils of drinking, I gave up thinking.

*****************

The trouble with jogging is that the ice falls out of your glass.

The trouble with swimming is that the ice melts.

*****************

Oh my Dear, Forget ur Fear
Let ur Dreams be Clear
Never put Tear, Please Here
I want tell one thing in ur Ear
Wish u very Happy "NEW YEAR"

*****************

An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in.
A pessimist stays up to make sure the old one leaves.
